Abstract
Welding is a metal connection process that is widely used in the manufacturing and construction industries. Differences in welding methods can affect heat distribution, microstructure, and mechanical properties of welded joints. This research aims to analyze and compare the hardness value and microstructure of AISI 1045 medium carbon steel from the welding results of FCAW and SMAW. The research uses an experimental method with an AISI 1045 steel specimen measuring 150 × 100 × 10 mm and a single V size of 60°. The welding process is carried out using 187 A current with a welding speed of 0.81 mm/second on FCAW and 0.76 mm/second on SMAW. Hardness testing was carried out using the Rockwell method on the HRB scale in the WM, HAZ, and BM areas, while the microstructure was observed using an optical microscope with a magnification of 400× after 3% Nital etching. The research results showed that the heat input value of FCAW was 80,80 kJ/mm and SMAW was 86,11 kJ/mm. The highest hardness value in FCAW is in the HAZ area of 92 HRB, while in SMAW it is in the WM area of 92.3 HRB. The microstructure of BM is dominated by ferrite and perlite, while HAZ shows an indication of the formation of a small part of martensite which increases its hardness. Overall, the difference in hardness value and microstructure between FCAW and SMAW is relatively small so that both methods produce almost the same mechanical properties in AISI 1045 steel. Keywords: AISI 1045, FCAW, SMAW, Rockwell Hardness, Micro Structure
