Abstract

The Blood Transport Box (BTB) is a blood transportation device required to maintain the thermal condition of blood within the 2°C–10°C distribution standard set by Indonesian Ministry of Health Regulation No. 91 of 2015. This study re-evaluates the performance of a thermoelectric cooling system in an 8000 mL BTB using four TEC1-12706 modules arranged in parallel and powered by a 12 Volt DC source. The methods applied were literature review and field study, using 8000 mL of bovine blood at an initial temperature of 2°C as the test medium to represent the thermal load of human blood. Testing was conducted for 120 minutes, with blood and air temperatures inside the box recorded every 20 minutes. The results showed that the air temperature inside the box decreased from 28°C to 10°C, while the blood temperature increased from 2°C to 8°C. The aluminum plate temperature, representing the cold side (coldsink) of the thermoelectric module, also decreased from 28°C to 7°C during testing, with the fastest rate of decrease occurring in the first 15 minutes before approaching a steady state. The calculated blood heat load was 21.11 W and the blood bag (PVC) heat load was 0.264 W, giving a total heat load of 21.374 W that the thermoelectric cooling system must overcome. Based on these results, the thermoelectric cooling system was able to lower the air temperature inside the BTB and slow the rate of blood temperature increase, keeping the final blood temperature within the required 2°C–10°C distribution range. These findings indicate that a thermoelectric system with four TEC1-12706 modules has potential as an alternative cooling method for short-distance blood transport, although greater cooling capacity and improved thermal insulation are still needed for optimal performance.
