Abstract
Aluminum 2024 is a 2xxx series aluminum alloy widely used in the aerospace industry due to its high strength-to-weight ratio. The mechanical properties of this material are strongly influenced by the applied heat treatment, particularly through the precipitation hardening mechanism (T4), which consists of solution heat treatment, quenching, and natural aging. This study aims to determine the effect of natural aging time variation on the hardness and microstructure of Aluminum 2024. Specimens were heated at 480°C, quenched in water, and subsequently subjected to natural aging at room temperature for 4, 8, and 14 days. Hardness testing was conducted using the Rockwell B scale (HRB), while microstructural observation was performed through metallographic methods using an optical microscope at 400× magnification. The results showed that the untreated specimen had the highest hardness value of 82.9 HRB, while after T4 treatment the hardness decreased to 79.21 HRB at 4 days of natural aging, then increased to 80.3 HRB at 8 days and 81.8 HRB at 14 days. The increase in natural aging time showed a tendency toward higher hardness due to the gradual precipitation process within the aluminum matrix, although the hardness values had not yet exceeded the initial condition of the material. Microstructural observation showed no significant visual changes between treatment variations, with the structure dominated by α-Al matrix, grain boundaries, and intermetallic particles.
