Abstract

The increasing demand for environmentally friendly alternative energy has encouraged the utilization of biomass as a renewable fuel source, one of which is in the form of wood charcoal briquettes. The quality of briquettes is influenced by several factors, including the composition of raw materials and the mixing duration. This study aims to analyze the effect of variations in material composition and mixing duration using a horizontal-type mixing machine on the quality of wood charcoal briquettes. The research employed an experimental method using three material composition variations: A1 (70% wood charcoal, 10% rice husk ash, 10% water, and 10% tapioca flour), A2 (65% wood charcoal, 15% rice husk ash, 10% water, and 10% tapioca flour), and A3 (60% wood charcoal, 20% rice husk ash, 10% water, and 10% tapioca flour). The mixing durations applied were 4, 8, and 12 minutes. The evaluated parameters included calorific value, moisture content, fixed carbon content, volatile matter content, and ash content based on the Indonesian National Standard (SNI). The results showed that a mixing duration of 12 minutes produced the most homogeneous mixture compared to mixing durations of 4 and 8 minutes. The horizontal-type mixing machine had a production capacity of 25 kg per batch or approximately 1,000 kg per day with an 8-hour working period. The test results indicated that the calorific values of all samples met the SNI requirements, with the highest value recorded for sample A3 at 6,987.15 cal/g. However, the moisture content, fixed carbon content, volatile matter content, and ash content of most samples did not meet the SNI standards. Based on the overall test results, composition A2 produced the briquette quality that was closest to the SNI requirements compared to compositions A1 and A3.
