Abstract
Conventional wheelbarrows require relatively large operator force during material dumping, particularly when the carried load approaches the maximum capacity. This study aims to design and manufacture a manual dumping wheelbarrow using a lever mechanism to reduce operator workload, improve dumping efficiency, and provide a more ergonomic and stable tool. The research method consisted of field study, literature study, preparation of tools and materials, design, fabrication and assembly, and equipment testing. The analysis covered load weight, hinge moment, operator force on the lever, force equilibrium, and an estimated emptying efficiency. Assuming a 100 kg sand load and gravitational acceleration of 9.81 m/s², the load weight was 981 N. Based on the calculations in the final project report, the load moment about the hinge was 461.07 N·m and the operator force on the lever was 623 N. The dumping wheelbarrow was designed with a maximum dumping angle of approximately 60°. Based on the technical estimation, the dumping wheelbarrow leaves approximately 1–3 kg of sand, corresponding to an emptying efficiency of 97–99%, while the conventional wheelbarrow is estimated to leave 5–10 kg, with an efficiency of 90–95%. These results indicate that the lever mechanism provides mechanical advantage and makes the dumping process more controlled and stable, with potential to reduce operator fatigue.
