Abstract
Flow disturbances downstream of a 90° elbow can cause deviations in turbine flow meter readings, while a perforated plate, as a simple flow straightener, involves a trade-off between flow conditioning and pressure loss governed by its hole diameter. This study aims to examine the effect of perforated plate hole diameter on flow characteristics, pressure drop, and flow meter reading error in a piping system. An experimental method was applied in a 48 mm water pipe using three specimens (FS-1, FS-2, and FS-3; hole diameters of 4, 5, and 6 mm; 19 holes, triangular pitch, 3 mm thickness; open area ratios of 13.19%, 20.62%, and 29.69%), together with a no-straightener baseline. Tests were conducted at two flow rates (Re ≈ 64,500 and 99,200) with three replicates, yielding 24 tests. Data were collected from two flow meters, upstream and downstream pressure measurements, and tracer dye visualization, and were analyzed descriptively and quantitatively through pressure drop, pressure drop coefficient (ζ), and the relative error of Flow Meter 1 against Flow Meter 2. The results show that larger hole diameters reduce pressure drop and ζ, whereas swirl patterns could not be identified conclusively. At high flow rate, the mean errors of FS-1, FS-2, and FS-3 were 11.48%, 8.15%, and 4.66% (baseline 8.32%); at low flow rate they were 8.93%, 7.16%, and 21.74% (baseline 2.55%). It is concluded that no single diameter is optimal for all conditions, and FS-2 (5 mm) offers the most balanced compromise between error and pressure drop. Keywords: perforated plate; flow straightener; hole diameter; turbine flow meter; pressure drop.
