Abstract
This study aims to determine the effect of V-groove and Double V-groove joint variations on the hardness and microstructure of AISI 1045 steel welded using the Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) process. AISI 1045 is a medium-carbon steel widely used in machine components and structural applications; therefore, it requires welded joints with good mechanical properties. Variations in groove geometry are expected to influence heat distribution during welding, thereby affecting the mechanical properties and microstructure of the material. This research employed an experimental method using AISI 1045 steel as the test material. The welding process was carried out using the SMAW method with an E7018 electrode of 3.2 mm diameter at a welding current of 82 A. The groove variations used were V-groove and Double V-groove. After welding, the specimens were subjected to Rockwell B (HRB) hardness testing and microstructural observation using an optical microscope at 400× magnification. The results indicate that groove geometry significantly affects the hardness distribution and microstructural characteristics of AISI 1045 steel. The average hardness of the base metal before welding was 90.2 HRB. After welding, the average weld metal hardness was 91.9 HRB for the V-groove specimen and 93.0 HRB for the Double V-groove specimen. The highest hardness values were observed in the Heat Affected Zone (HAZ), reaching 94.1 HRB for the V-groove and 93.6 HRB for the Double V-groove. Microstructural observations revealed that all specimens were predominantly composed of ferrite and pearlite phases. The welding process altered the morphology, grain size, and phase distribution, particularly in the weld metal and HAZ, due to the heating and cooling cycles during welding. The variation in groove geometry was proven to influence the resulting microstructure, which subsequently affected the mechanical properties of the welded material.
