Abstract
This study aims to design and test a simple portable coffee grinder that is easy to use, economical, and does not require electrical energy. The device is designed using a manual drive system in which rotational force from a handle is transmitted through a shaft to the grinding burr. The construction of the device consists of a grinder support, shaft, bearings, grinding mechanism, handle, and a container for collecting the ground coffee. The research method included field observation, literature study, the design process, fabrication and assembly of the device, and performance testing. The tests were conducted using coffee beans with different grinding levels based on mesh sizes of 5, 7, and 9. The observed parameters included the number of handle rotations, grinding time, rotational speed, and the fineness of the ground coffee. The test results showed that at mesh size 9, 1,387 handle rotations were required in 17 minutes and 48 seconds, producing a rotational speed of approximately 77.9 RPM and very fine coffee powder. At mesh size 7, 418 rotations were completed in 6 minutes and 12 seconds, with a rotational speed of approximately 66.56 RPM, producing slightly fine coffee powder. Meanwhile, at mesh size 5, 324 rotations were completed in 4 minutes and 36 seconds, with a rotational speed of approximately 70.43 RPM, producing a coarser coffee grind. Based on the results, the simple portable coffee grinder was able to function properly and produce different levels of coffee powder fineness according to the selected mesh size. The device can serve as an alternative for household use and small-scale businesses requiring a practical and portable manual coffee grinder.
