Abstract
Because a longer holding time provided a greater opportunity for carbon to diffuse into the steel surface. Following cooling with water, the steel surface exhibited increased hardness. Therefore This study aims to determine the effect of holding time variations in the pack carburizing process on the hardness value of AISI 1018 steel. The material used was low-carbon AISI 1018 steel consisting of four specimens, namely one untreated specimen and three specimens subjected to the pack carburizing treatment with holding times of 30, 60, and 90 minutes at a temperature of 850°C. Coconut shell charcoal weighing 450 grams was used as the carburizing medium. After the heating process and holding time were completed, the specimens were cooled using water as the cooling medium. Hardness testing was conducted using a Rockwell Hardness Tester with the Rockwell B (HRB) scale. Each specimen was tested at five different points, and the test results were then averaged to obtain the mean hardness value. The results showed that variations in holding time during the pack carburizing process affected the hardness value of AISI 1018 steel. The average hardness value of the untreated specimen was 85.2 HRB, while the specimens treated with holding times of 30, 60, and 90 minutes had hardness values of 85.6, 88.3, and 90.3 HRB, respectively. The highest hardness value was obtained at a holding time of 90 minutes, reaching 90.3 HRB. The increase in hardness occurred, increasing the holding time in the pack carburizing process tends to increase the hardness value of AISI 1018 steel. Keywords: AISI 1018, pack carburizing, holding time, hardness, HRB.
