Abstract

Personality types, often categorized into extroversion and introversion, are believed to contribute to shaping students’ learning process and outcomes, particularly in acquiring language skills such as English. This research investigated the potential correlation between students’ personality types and their level of English proficiency. The study involved undergraduate students from the English Education Study Program at Tridinanti University in Palembang. A quantitative approach with a correlational research method was employed. The sample consisted of 57 students. The data were obtained through a personality questionnaire adopted from Wulandari (2017), which included 20 items to classify students’ personality types, and a TOEFL prediction test from Philips (2001) to measure their English proficiency. This study employed Pearson’s correlation coefficient alongside regression analysis as the primary analytical methods. The results indicated that: 1) most students were classified as introverts (68.6%); 2) the majority of students’ English proficiency level was low intermediate (31.4%); 3) the results showed a very low positive relationship between personality types and English proficiency, indicating a non-significant relationship; and 4) the results showed a low positive contribution between personality types to English proficiency, indicating non-significant relationship (2.2%). These findings suggest that personality type alone is not a strong predictor of English proficiency. However, personality may still influence student’ choice of learning strategies, which can indirectly affect their language learning outcomes. Thus, while the direct correlation is minimal, personality remains a factor worth considering in the broader context of language education and student-centered teaching approaches.
