Abstract
A fin is an extended surface designed to enhance the rate of heat transfer by increasing the surface area. Fin performance is influenced by various factors, one of which is the material's thermal conductivity. This study aims to analyze the effect of material variations on temperature distribution, actual heat transfer rate, efficiency, and effectiveness of solid cylindrical fins, as well as to determine which material offers the best thermal performance. The research was conducted experimentally using five types of materials—copper, aluminum, brass, iron, and stainless steel—each with a diameter of 10 mm and a length of 400 mm. Testing was performed under natural convection conditions with a heating power of 20 Watts. Temperature measurements were taken using six Type-K thermocouples installed along the fin at 80 mm intervals. The results indicate that materials with higher thermal conductivity yield more uniform temperature distribution, higher heat transfer rates, and greater fin efficiency and effectiveness. The obtained fin efficiency values were 37.91% for copper, 29.08% for aluminum, 22.58% for brass, 14.75% for iron, and 6.5% for stainless steel. Copper demonstrated the best thermal performance, while stainless steel showed the lowest. Thus, the material's thermal conductivity is proven to influence the temperature distribution, actual heat transfer rate, efficiency, and effectiveness of solid cylindrical fins.
