Abstract
This study aims to investigate the effect of temperature variations in the patenting process on the hardness, microstructure, and estimated tensile strength of AISI 1050 medium-carbon steel. The specimens were austenitized at 800°C for 10 minutes, immersed in lead bath at temperatures of 400°C, 450°C, 500°C, 550°C, and 600°C for 10 minutes, and then air cooled. The tests included Rockwell C (HRC) hardness testing, microstructural observation using an optical microscope at 400× magnification, and conversion of hardness values to the Brinell (HB) scale to estimate tensile strength. The results showed that the patenting process increased the hardness compared to the untreated specimen. The highest hardness was obtained at a patenting temperature of 400°C, reaching 53.9 HRC with an estimated tensile strength of 1,811 MPa, while the lowest hardness was recorded at 600°C, reaching 51.8 HRC with an estimated tensile strength of 1,711 MPa. The microstructure changed from ferrite–pearlite in the untreated specimen to martensite after hardening, whereas the patented specimens were predominantly composed of pearlite with a decreasing amount of bainite as the patenting temperature increased. Based on the results, a patenting temperature of 400°C provided the best combination of mechanical properties in this study, while a temperature of 550°C produced a finer pearlite structure as the main characteristic of the patenting process.
