Abstract
Speaking is a fundamental skill for achieving effective communication in English as a Foreign Language (EFL); nevertheless, a considerable number of university students still face challenges in oral communication. This research sought to examine the extent of English speaking difficulties and to identify the aspect that most significantly affects undergraduate students at the Teacher Training and Education Faculty, Tridinanti University. Adopting a descriptive quantitative approach with a cross-sectional survey design, the study included 130 undergraduate participants selected through total sampling technique. An adapted questionnaire covering four dimensions—affective, linguistic, social, and instructional—was used to gather the data, which were subsequently examined through descriptive statistical methods such as frequency distribution, percentages, and mean scores. Results indicated that students faced a moderate degree of difficulty in English speaking, reflected in an overall mean score of 35.02. Among the four dimensions examined, the affective aspect emerged as the most influential source of difficulty (M = 3.29), followed by the linguistic (M = 3.02) and social (M = 2.98) dimensions, while the instructional aspect showed the lowest mean value (M = 2.54). These results indicate that psychological barriers represent the most significant obstacle affecting students' oral performance in English. Accordingly, it is recommended that lecturers foster supportive classroom environments and design confidence-enhancing speaking exercises to help alleviate students' anxiety and strengthen their overall oral communication skills. Keywords: English speaking, Student difficulties level, aspects of difficulties
