Abstract

An experimental research method was employed. AISI 1040 steel specimens were heated to an austenitizing temperature of 850°C with a holding time of 30 minutes, then cooled using brine and seawater as quenching media. Subsequently, hardness testing (Rockwell C method), Charpy impact testing, and microstructural analysis using an optical microscope were conducted. The test data were analyzed descriptively and comparatively to determine the effect of each quenching medium on changes in material properties. The results indicate that brine produced a higher cooling rate than seawater, thereby leading to a more significant increase in the hardness of the AISI 1040 steel. The resulting microstructure was dominated by martensite—which was more abundant and finer—in specimens quenched in brine, whereas specimens quenched in seawater exhibited a mixture of martensite and bainite with a lower martensite fraction. Conversely, specimens quenched in seawater demonstrated superior toughness compared to those quenched in brine. Thus, the choice of quenching medium significantly influences the mechanical properties and microstructure of AISI 1040 steel following the hardening process.
