Abstract

Online food-delivery services are growing rapidly, yet keeping ready-to-eat food above 60°C during two-wheeled delivery remains challenging, as it risks entering the microbiological danger zone (4–60°C); prior studies on Positive Temperature Coefficient (PTC) heaters have been limited to static applications and have not evaluated dynamic distribution conditions. This study analyzes the performance of a PTC heating system integrated into an aluminum-foil-lined styrofoam isothermal box in maintaining food temperature at 60–70°C, calculates heat loss (Q_loss) and energy efficiency, and examines the effect of travel distance on both variables. A quantitative experimental method with an applied Research and Development approach was used, involving field trials on a motorbike in Palembang City across distances of 2, 4, and 6 km, each replicated three times under light and congested traffic, analyzed using Fourier's conduction law, one-sample t-test, and Pearson correlation. Results show average energy efficiency of 82.49% (light traffic) and 80.79% (congested traffic), significantly exceeding the 50% target (p < 0.001), with Q_loss increasing linearly with distance (r = 0.984 - 0.975; p < 0.001). Success in keeping food above 60°C rose from 33.3% to 88.9% when initial food temperature was raised from 62.85°C to 72.55°C. The PTC heating system is concluded to be effective and efficient for dynamic distribution, though its success depends heavily on an adequately high initial food temperature before delivery. Keywords: PTC heating element, styrofoam isothermal box, heat loss (Q_loss), energy efficiency, ready-to-eat food safety
