Abstract

This study investigates the effect of hardening heat treatment on AISI 1045 steel quenched using water and oil, followed by tempering at 300°C, 350°C, and 400°C. The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of different quenching media and tempering temperatures on the hardness and microstructure of AISI 1045 steel. The specimens were heated to a hardening temperature of 830°C and held for 15 minutes, then rapidly cooled using water and oil as quenching media. After quenching, the specimens were tempered at 300°C, 350°C, and 400°C for 10 minutes. Hardness testing was conducted using the Rockwell C method with a load of 150 kg at five different test points, while microstructure observations were carried out using an optical microscope after polishing and etching. The results showed that the untreated specimen had an average hardness value of 30.7 HRC. For specimens quenched in water, the hardness values after tempering were 51.9 HRC at 300°C, 47.2 HRC at 350°C, and 44.2 HRC at 400°C. For specimens quenched in oil, the hardness values were 43.9 HRC at 300°C, 42.5 HRC at 350°C, and 41.34 HRC at 400°C. The highest hardness value was obtained in the water-quenched specimen tempered at 300°C, while the lowest hardness value after heat treatment was obtained in the oil-quenched specimen tempered at 400°C. These results indicate that water quenching produces higher hardness than oil quenching, and increasing the tempering temperature reduces the hardness of AISI 1045 steel. Microstructure observations showed that the untreated specimen consisted of ferrite, pearlite, and cementite. After the hardening process, martensite was formed. At a tempering temperature of 300°C, tempered martensite and a small amount of carbide began to form. At 350°C, tempered martensite still dominated with changes in carbide distribution. At 400°C, tempered martensite became more dominant and was accompanied by a further decrease in hardness. Therefore, the quenching medium and tempering temperature significantly affect the hardness and microstructure of AISI 1045 steel.
