Abstract
This study aims to determine the effect of preheat temperature variations on the hardness and microstructural changes of SMAW welded joints of AISI 1045 steel. The material used was AISI 1045 steel with a thickness of 10 mm, welded using the Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) process with E7018 electrodes. The preheat temperature variations consisted of no preheat, 100°C, 150°C, and 200°C. Hardness testing was conducted using the Rockwell B (HRB) method in the Weld Metal (WM), Heat Affected Zone (HAZ), and Base Metal (BM) regions, while microstructural observations were performed using a metallographic microscope at 400× magnification. The results showed that the hardness values varied with each preheat temperature. Without preheat, the average hardness values were 91.9 HRB in the WM, 93.1 HRB in the HAZ, and 93.8 HRB in the BM. At a preheat temperature of 100°C, the hardness increased to 93.5 HRB in the WM, 93.8 HRB in the HAZ, and 94.2 HRB in the BM. At 150°C, the hardness values were 93.2 HRB in the WM, 93.5 HRB in the HAZ, and 93.7 HRB in the BM. Meanwhile, at 200°C, the WM hardness decreased to 89.9 HRB, while the HAZ and BM recorded 92.8 HRB and 93.6 HRB, respectively. Microstructural observations showed changes in the WM and HAZ regions due to the heating and cooling cycles during welding. The changes in hardness did not show a linear relationship with increasing preheat temperature because they were also influenced by the thermal conditions and heat input during the welding process.
