Abstract

This study aims to analyze the hardness and microstructure of AISI 1037 steel subjected to heat treatment using different quenching media, namely ice water, salt water, and oil, followed by a tempering process. The research was conducted experimentally by preparing specimens for several treatment conditions, including untreated material, normalizing, hardening with different quenching media, and hardening followed by tempering. The normalizing process was carried out at a temperature of 860°C for 10 minutes, while hardening was performed at 820°C for 15 minutes. The tempering process was subsequently conducted at 450°C for 30 minutes. Hardness testing was performed using the Rockwell hardness test, with five measurement points for each specimen, and the results were calculated as average values. Microstructural observations were also conducted to identify changes in the steel structure following heat treatment. The results showed that the untreated specimen had a hardness value of 8.0 HRC, while the normalized specimen had a hardness value of 6.5 HRC. After hardening, the specimens quenched in oil, salt water, and ice water exhibited hardness values of 6.9 HRC, 8.1 HRC, and 8.4 HRC, respectively. Following tempering, the hardness values decreased to 6.8 HRC for oil quenching, 7.4 HRC for salt-water quenching, and 7.5 HRC for ice-water quenching. These results indicate that ice water produced the highest hardness value among the quenching media investigated, both before and after tempering. Microstructural observations indicated changes in the steel structure following hardening and tempering, including the formation of martensitic structures and changes associated with the tempering process. In conclusion, the selection of quenching medium influences the hardness and microstructure of AISI 1037 steel, while tempering affects the final hardness obtained after hardening.
