Abstract

The objectives of this study were to find out whether or not there was any significant improvement in students’ reading achievement of narrative texts after being taught by using the Webtoon application and to find out whether or not there was any significant difference in students’ reading achievement between those who were taught by using the Webtoon application and those who were taught by using conventional teaching. The population of this study was the tenth-grade students of SMK Negeri 1 Sekayu. The sample consisted of 59 students, selected by using purposive sampling, with 29 students in the experimental group and 30 students in the control group. The method of this study was quantitative research with a quasi-experimental design. The data were collected by using a reading achievement test administered as a pre-test and post-test and analyzed by using paired-samples t-test and independent-samples t-test. The results showed that the mean score of the experimental group increased from 51.03 to 83.59, while the control group increased from 58.40 to 80.13. The paired-samples t-test showed a significant improvement in the experimental group’s reading achievement. Meanwhile, the independent-samples t-test showed that there was no significant difference between the experimental and control groups, with p = 0.189. Therefore, the Webtoon application improved students’ reading achievement within the experimental group, but the difference between the two groups was not statistically significant.
