Abstract
This study aims to analyze the effect of varying hardening temperatures followed by quenching using palm oil (Crude Palm Oil/CPO) as a cooling medium on the hardness and microstructure of AISI 1040 steel. The hardening temperatures used were 820°C, 830°C, and 840°C, with an untreated specimen used as a comparison. Hardness testing was conducted using the Rockwell B (HRB) method, while changes in the microstructure were observed using a metallographic microscope. The test results showed that the average hardness of AISI 1040 steel increased with increasing hardening temperature, from the untreated condition to the 840 °C treatment. In the untreated condition, the average hardness was 72.4 HRB. After the hardening and quenching processes using palm oil (CPO) as the cooling medium, the hardness increased to 72.9 HRB at 820 °C, 73.5 HRB at 830 °C, and 75.6 HRB at 840 °C. Microstructural observations showed that the initial condition of AISI 1040 steel was dominated by ferrite and pearlite structures, while after the hardening and quenching processes, microstructural changes occurred due to the transformation of austenite during cooling, resulting in the formation of martensite. Based on the results, variations in hardening temperature affected the hardness and microstructure of AISI 1040 steel. However, the increase in temperature within the range of 820–840 °C did not result in a linear increase in hardness. Keywords: AISI 1040 Steel, Palm Oil (CPO), Hardness, Microstructure.
