Abstract

Climate change leading to rising outdoor air temperatures affects the performance of train cooling systems, including the Bukit Serelo Economy Train serving the Kertapati–Lubuklinggau route. This study aims to evaluate the cooling system performance of the Bukit Serelo Economy Train through thermal load analysis using the Cooling Load Temperature Difference (CLTD) and Overall Thermal Transfer Value (OTTV) methods, and to compare the results with the Minimum Service Standards (SPM) and the installed air conditioning (AC) capacity. Actual temperature measurements were conducted at four points inside the passenger car during a 6-hour 25-minute journey at one-hour intervals. The OTTV calculation refers to SNI 03-6389-2020, while the cooling load was calculated using the CLTD method based on SNI 03-6572-2001 and ASHRAE 1997 data. The measurement results show that the average cabin temperature ranged from 25.2°C to 26.05°C, remaining below the maximum limit of 27°C according to PM 63 of 2019, with a non-compliance frequency of 0%. The total OTTV value obtained was 22.89 W/m², far below the SNI threshold of 35 W/m², indicating excellent thermal insulation performance of the train envelope. The total cooling load calculated using the CLTD method was 19,727.15 W, and after adding a 10% safety factor, it became 21,699.87 W. The installed AC capacity is 88,000 BTU/h (≈25,790 W), meaning the cooling load accounts for only 84.14% of the AC capacity. Therefore, the installed AC capacity is still adequate and does not experience under-capacity, with a capacity reserve of approximately 15.86–23.51%. Keywords: cooling load, CLTD, OTTV, economy train, thermal comfort
