Abstract

ABSTRAK Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menyelidiki pengaruh proses normalizing dan hardening terhadap kekerasan dan struktur mikro AISI 1045. AISI 1045 merupakan baja karbon menengah yang sering digunakan dalam industri, terutama pada komponen mesin yang membutuhkan kekuatan dan ketangguhan. Dalam penelitian ini, dilakukan dua perlakuan panas, yaitu normalizing pada suhu 841°C dan hardening pada suhu 814°C, dengan pendinginan menggunakan udara untuk normalizing dan air untuk hardening. Setelah proses perlakuan panas, dilakukan uji kekerasan dengan metode Rockwell serta pengamatan struktur mikro menggunakan mikroskop optik. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa proses normalizing menghasilkan peningkatan kekerasan rata-rata menjadi 92,8 HRB dan memperbaiki homogenitas struktur mikro dengan butiran ferrite dan pearlite yang lebih halus. Proses hardening lebih lanjut meningkatkan kekerasan material hingga 97,3 HRB dengan terbentuknya struktur martensit yang sangat keras namun getas. Media pendingin berperan signifikan dalam menentukan hasil akhir kekerasan dan struktur mikro material. Kesimpulannya, perlakuan panas normalizing dan hardening secara efektif meningkatkan kekerasan dan memperbaiki struktur mikro AISI 1045, dengan hardening memberikan kekerasan yang lebih tinggi, namun mengorbankan ketangguhan. Penelitian ini memberikan panduan penting bagi industri untuk meningkatkan kualitas material melalui perlakuan panas yang tepat. Kata Kunci: AISI 1045, normalizing, hardening, kekerasan, struktur mikro ABSTRACT This research aims to investigate the effect of the normalizing and hardening processes on the hardness and microstructure of AISI 1045. AISI 1045 is a medium carbon steel that is often used in industry, especially in machine components that require strength and toughness. In this research, two heat treatments were carried out, namely normalizing at a temperature of 841°C and hardening at a temperature of 814°C, with cooling using air for normalizing and water for hardening. After the heat treatment process, a hardness test was carried out using the Rockwell method and observation of the microstructure using an optical microscope The research results show that the normalizing process results in an increase in average hardness to 92.8 HRB and improves the homogeneity of the microstructure with finer ferrite and pearlite grains. The hardening process further increases the hardness of the material to 97.3 HRB with the formation of a very hard but brittle martensite structure. The cooling medium plays a significant role in determining the final hardness and microstructure of the material. In conclusion, normalizing and hardening heat treatments effectively increase the hardness and improve the microstructure of AISI 1045, with hardening providing higher hardness, but at the expense of toughness.
