Abstract

AISI 1020 steel is a low-carbon steel that has good strength and ductility, but relatively low surface hardness. One method that can be used to improve the surface hardness of steel is the pack carburizing process. This study aims to determine the effect of variations in charcoal types during the pack carburizing process on the hardness value of AISI 1020 steel and to compare the effectiveness of gelam wood charcoal, bamboo charcoal, and coconut shell charcoal. This research used a laboratory experimental method. The pack carburizing process was carried out at a temperature of 870°C for 1 hour, followed by air cooling. The carbon media used were gelam wood charcoal, bamboo charcoal, and coconut shell charcoal with a particle size of mesh 100 (0.15 mm), mixed with barium carbonate (BaCO₃) as an energizer. Hardness testing was conducted using the Rockwell B (HRB) method. The results showed that the pack carburizing process using different types of charcoal increased the hardness value of AISI 1020 steel. The untreated specimen had an average hardness value of 82.9 HRB. After the pack carburizing process, the hardness increased to 85.6 HRB using gelam wood charcoal, 87.4 HRB using bamboo charcoal, and 88.1 HRB using coconut shell charcoal. Based on these results, coconut shell charcoal produced the highest hardness value compared with bamboo charcoal and gelam wood charcoal. Therefore, variations in charcoal type affect the increase in the surface hardness of AISI 1020 steel, with coconut shell charcoal being the most effective carbon medium in this study. Keywords: AISI 1020, Pack Carburizing, Charcoal Type Variation, Hardness, Rockwell B.
