Abstract

Sedimentation is a frequent problem in waterways, primarily caused by land-use changes. When the flow is unable to transport sediment, it will settle in certain areas. This study analyzes the flow velocity distribution, bed load sediment discharge, and surface runoff potential at a 55-degree open channel bend in the Buah Sub-watershed, Palembang City. The sediment discharge calculation was performed using the Frijlink method. A 2D hydrodynamic simulation was conducted using MIKE 21 software to model the runoff impact. The results indicate an uneven velocity distribution: velocity increases at the outer bend (0.1435 m/s) due to centrifugal force, and decreases at the inner bend (0.124 m/s). This decrease in kinetic energy causes higher sediment accumulation at the inner bend, with a bed load discharge of 3.53 × 10⁻⁵ m³/s, compared to 3.34 × 10⁻⁵ m³/s at the outer bend. The MIKE 21 simulation confirms that sediment deposition at the inner bend significantly narrows the channel's cross-section. During peak water elevations, this narrowing triggers a backwater effect, leading to overtopping and surface runoff. Routine maintenance, such as dredging at the inner bend, is highly recommended to mitigate flood risks. Keywords: Bed Load, MIKE 21, Channel Bend, Frijlink.
