Abstract

This study examines the effect of T6 heat treatment, comprising solution heat treatment, quenching, and artificial aging, on the mechanical properties and microstructure of Aluminium Alloy 6061. Solution heat treatment was performed at 510°C for 15 minutes, followed by water quenching, then artificial aging at 150°C, 175°C, and 200°C for 1 hour each. Hardness was measured using the Rockwell B method, while microstructure was observed using an optical microscope. Results showed the average hardness of the untreated specimen was 68.75 HRB, increasing to 71.50 HRB after aging at 150°C, then decreasing to 67.75 HRB at 175°C and 64.25 HRB at 200°C. Microstructural observation revealed a change in particle morphology from large, clustered globular particles to finer, more evenly distributed particles at 150°C, followed by elongated, angular fragments at higher temperatures, consistent with an over-aging tendency. The highest hardness was obtained at an artificial aging temperature of 150°C for 1 hour.
