Abstract

Speaking is an important aspect in language learning. By speaking people can get information and express their ideas. One of factors affects students in learning speaking is self-motivation. Thus, the writer would like to conduct the study entitled “The Correlation between Self-motivation and Speaking Achievement of the Eleventh Grade Students of Senior High School of Pesantren Modern Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin Palembang”. The objectives of this study was to find out whether or not significant correlation between self-motivation and speaking achievement of the eleventh grade students of Senior High School of Pesantren Modern Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin Palembang. Correlational method was used as the research method in this study. The sample of this study was sixty three of the eleventh grade students of Senior High School of Pesantren Modern Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin Palembang. Based on the result of analyses, the data were collected by giving speaking test which was scored by two raters and giving questionnaire for self-motivation data questionnaire. The data were analyzed by using descriptive analysis and correlation analysis. It was found that no correlation coefficient level between students’ self-motivation and speaking achievement was 0.141 with the significant value was higher than 0.05. It indicated that both variables weren’t correlated. Key Words: Correlation, Self-motivation, speaking achievement
